India has been maintaining a very healthy economic growth rate; one of the highest in the world, about 8 to 9% Y2Y, in the past one decade or so. One of the major contributors of the growth story is the IT and Service sector. It is also the fastest growing segment of the economy.

The growth of Indian IT industry has been phenomenal in terms of scale and scope. It is quite matured, yet mostly limited to s/w services. IT industry is now slowly moving into the product design market scaling up the value chain and thereby creating new opportunities in the area of high end s/w design.

Semiconductor Industry in India on the other hand,  is still in nascent state; lagging behind the software industry in terms of maturity and scale. Although it is a late and slow start, the Semiconductor Industry is catching up with impressive growth rate. India Semiconductor Association (ISA) estimates a huge workforce of about 750,000 professionals working in the semiconductor industry by 2015 (current workforce size is around 75,000).

Now the question is where is this  huge increase in skilled engineering workforce going to come from. According to an estimate of NASSCOM, India produces over 450,000 engineers every year across all disciplines but only a small fraction are skilled enough to be employed. When it comes to a specialized field like VLSI Design and Embedded systems the University education system has created a wide gap between what is taught and what is really expected in the Industry to be really productive. As a result onus is on the design companies to train their new recruits, incurring a huge cost upon themselves.  

Besides our engineers must be trained to the global standards for India to have a genuine edge in the global IT and Semiconductor Industry.
